In our continuous effort to empower communities and promote sustainable change, Taking Sustainable Actions Justly in Communities (TAJIC) Foundation recently led an impactful awareness campaign in Nkongle, a Muslim community in the South West Region of Cameroon. The campaign focused on early marriage prevention, the right to education, and menstrual hygiene management, particularly among internally displaced persons (IDPs) and their host families.
Empowering Mothers to Protect Their Daughters’ Future
One of the key messages we emphasized was the critical role that mothers play in preventing early marriages. Many young girls are forced into marriage at a tender age, denying them the opportunity to receive an education and build a promising future. We reminded the women that sending their daughters to school and encouraging vocational training is a powerful way to secure their future and break the cycle of poverty.
Addressing Menstrual Hygiene: Breaking the Silence
Menstrual hygiene remains a sensitive topic in many communities, with several women admitting that they feel too shy to discuss it with their daughters. However, poor menstrual hygiene can lead to infections, public embarrassment, and even social stigma. During the campaign, we educated the women on proper menstrual hygiene management and encouraged open conversations with their daughters.
By equipping young girls with the knowledge and resources they need to manage their menstruation safely and confidently, we help reduce stigma and improve their well-being. Teaching proper hygiene practices also ensures that girls do not miss school due to menstruation-related challenges.
A Call for Action
The women in Nkongle actively participated in discussions, acknowledging the need for change. If they commit to applying what they learned—prioritizing education, discouraging early marriage, and fostering open conversations on menstrual hygiene—they can make a significant difference in their community.
By working together, we can reduce the rate of child marriages, ensure more girls stay in school, and promote a healthier and more informed society. TAJIC Foundation remains dedicated to supporting vulnerable communities and advocating for the rights of young girls across Cameroon.
Let’s continue the conversation and work towards a brighter future for our daughters!
